Abstract

This essay looks at the complex multi-dimensionality of the mutual process of transference, which also includes transgenerational traumata. A particular focus will be on the position of the analyst in this process. Picking up on three cases, this essay will show how unconscious fantasies of the analysand are experienced by the analyst (who is also the author of this essay) as uncanny, attacking and also disorienting events. At the same time, these three cases also reveal moments of epiphany which lead to a radical change of course in the analytical process.
