The third instance embodied by the state to protect a labour contract is precisely what psychoanalysis cannot invoke. Understanding the analytic relationship as a contract represents an imaginary guarantee on the part of the analyst. The implications of Lacanian authorisation by itself in the race for recognition that took place in Italy with the Ossicini Law are outlined here. The question of the ethics of psychoanalysis and the social bond it maintains are discussed from this perspective.
